Supporting our community
By sharing our time and resources with others, we help grow and nurture the community we are a part of. We focus on water-based activities, initiatives in the area surrounding the port, environmental projects, and supporting Tairāwhiti’s rising young stars. We also hold events for the whole community to enjoy.

Every year, we provide $1,000 sponsorships to high-performing local athletes who are exemplary role models on and off the water. The funding is open to athletes competing in water sports including kayaking, waka ama, surfing, surf lifesaving, swimming, triathlon and sailing – all sports where Tairāwhiti shines on the national and world stage.
Each sponsorship goes towards travel, training and equipment costs, helping these young stars achieve their goals and aspirations.
Summer internship programme
At the end of each year, we welcome several students from Tairāwhiti to our summer internship programme. This offers them valuable work experience and the chance to build practical skills that will benefit them throughout their careers. While applying their academic learning in a professional environment, we also hope they will be inspired to contribute to their local community.
In the past, our interns have included students studying everything from engineering, finance and commerce to human resources and communications.
The internships are advertised on our careers page around August of each year.
Supporting our people
Whether it's supporting a staff member with a sports competition, or providing corporate sponsorship for a school event, we're proud to get behind our people.
Mulch donations
Each year we support a number of community planting days by donating mulch from our debarking plant. We deliver by the trailer load and the bark is used around native trees and in gardens across the region. Some projects we have donated to are the Waikanae Stream restoration, Kopuawhakapata Stream restoration, Tautua Village, Enviroschools and much more!
Wharf Wheels
Whenever possible, we hold unique events so that people can experience the port in new and unusual ways.
We've held two Wharf Wheels events for the opening of the Wharfside Log Yard in 2019 and more recently for the Wharf 7 rebuild.
At the Wharf 7 Wharf Wheels we had over 1400 people attend the event and zoom around the new wharf on their bikes, scooters and roller skates. Watch this epic highlight video of the day.
